Rudiger Wolfrum, born in 1941, is a German jurist and international law professor. He was a judge of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea from 1996 to 2017 and served as the tribunal president from 2005 to 2008. He has also been a professor of international law at Heidelberg University and director emeritus of the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law, and he served as vice president of the German Research Foundation from 1996 to 2002 and vice president of the Max Planck Society from 2002 to 2006. Beyond his judicial and academic roles he has trained judicial officials in Afghanistan and Sudan and acted as a United Nations mediator in the Darfur conflict.
