Rolv Einar Rasmussen Ryssdal was a Norwegian jurist who lived from 1914 to 1998. He served as permanent under-secretary of state in Norway's Ministry of Justice and the Police from 1956 to 1964 and then as the sixteenth chief justice of Norway's Supreme Court from 1969 to 1984. Ryssdal is best known internationally for his long tenure at the European Court of Human Rights, where he served as vice president from 1981 to 1985 and as president from 1985 until his death in 1998, making him a central figure in the development of European human rights jurisprudence.
