What was Roman Herzog known for as President of Germany?

He won respect for forthright apologies for Germany's colonial and Nazi past.

The presidency was a largely ceremonial post, and Herzog won respect in it for his forthright and eloquent apologies for the harm done by Germany during its colonial and Nazi periods.
