Johannes Althusius

Natural Law and International Law Founders

Johannes Althusius lived from 1563 to 1638 and was a German Dutch jurist and Calvinist political philosopher, best known for his 1603 work Politica Methodice Digesta, Atque Exemplis Sacris et Profanis Illustrata, which appeared in revised editions in 1610 and 1614. The ideas set out in that work relate to the early development of federalism in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and to the construction of the principle of subsidiarity.

FAQs

What is consociatio in the political thought of Johannes Althusius?

Consociatio is Althusius's idea of associative bonds building political life from the family up to a federal commonwealth.

Consociatio is the concept of associative bonds that weave the fabric of political life across multiple scales. Althusius pictured society as a nested hierarchy: the family, guilds and colleges, municipalities and provinces, and finally a universal commonwealth that is a federation of provinces united by mutual pacts. Each level keeps its autonomy while delegating specific competencies upward. The structure also empowers ephors, or elected overseers, to check rulers, and it anticipates the modern emphasis on shared rule and self-rule in federalism.
