Johannes Althusius lived from 1563 to 1638 and was a German Dutch jurist and Calvinist political philosopher, best known for his 1603 work Politica Methodice Digesta, Atque Exemplis Sacris et Profanis Illustrata, which appeared in revised editions in 1610 and 1614. The ideas set out in that work relate to the early development of federalism in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and to the construction of the principle of subsidiarity.
