Robert Shenton French, born 1947, is an Australian judge who served as Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia from September 2008 to January 2017. He graduated from the University of Western Australia in science and law, was admitted to practice in 1972, and worked as a barrister and solicitor before joining the Western Australian Bar in 1983. He was appointed to the Federal Court of Australia in 1986 and served as President of the National Native Title Tribunal from 1994 to 1998; his appointment as Chief Justice came directly from a lower federal court, an unusual path to the position. Since retiring as Chief Justice he has served as a Non-Permanent Justice of the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal, an International Judge of the Singapore International Commercial Court, and a Judge of the Court of Appeal of the Dubai International Financial Centre.
