Rene Demogue

Rene Demogue was a French jurist who studied law in Paris under Charles Beudant and Raymond Saleilles before completing a doctoral thesis on the civil reparation of offenses in 1897. He taught criminal law and comparative civil law at the University of Lille from 1901 before being elected professor of civil law in Paris in 1914. Demogue is best remembered for his influential distinction between obligations of means and obligations of result in the law of contractual liability, a distinction that reshaped how French civil law analyzed a debtor's duty of performance. He belonged to the generation of French civilists who, following the methodological renewal begun by Saleilles, rebuilt the study of French civil law around closer attention to judicial practice rather than pure exegesis of the civil code's text.
