As Chief Justice he wrote the 2011 ruling in Hacienda Luisita Inc versus PARC upholding land distribution to the hacienda farm workers. In 2012 he became the first high ranking Philippine official removed from office through impeachment, after the Senate convicted him of failing to disclose his statement of assets, liabilities and net worth.
