Ranganath Misra (1926 to 2012) was the twenty-first Chief Justice of India, serving from September 1990 to November 1991. He began practicing law at the Orissa High Court in 1950, became a judge there in 1969 and its Chief Justice in 1981, and was appointed to the Supreme Court of India in 1983. After retiring he became the first chairman of India's National Human Rights Commission in 1993 and later sat in the Rajya Sabha as a member of the Indian National Congress.

Ranganath Misra was an Indian jurist, who served as the 21st Chief Justice of India, from 25 September 1990 to 24 November 1991. He was also the first chairman of the National Human Rights Commission of India. He also served as Member of Parliament in Rajya Sabha from the Congress Party between 1998 and 2004. He is the second Supreme Court judge to become a Rajya Sabha member after Baharul Islam who was also elected as Indian National Congress member.
