Raghunandan Swarup Pathak

Raghunandan Swarup Pathak, who lived from November 25, 1924, to November 17, 2007, was an Indian jurist who served as the 18th Chief Justice of India before becoming a judge of the International Court of Justice. He began his judicial career as a judge of the Allahabad High Court in 1962, became Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court in 1972, and joined the Supreme Court of India in 1978. He served as Chief Justice of India from December 21, 1986, to June 18, 1989, authoring 267 judgments during his tenure. Following his retirement from the Supreme Court, he was elected to the International Court of Justice in a special election held after the death of a sitting Indian judge, and served there from 1989 to 1991.
