Raffaele Sabato is an Italian jurist born on 1 October 1960 in Castellammare di Stabia, near Naples. He earned a law degree from the University of Naples in 1983, a Master of Comparative Jurisprudence from the University of Texas at Austin School of Law, a degree in political science from the University of Macerata in 1988 and a postgraduate degree in commercial law from the Federico II University of Naples in 1991. Appointed a judge in 1991, he sat for more than two decades in civil and criminal matters at the Naples courts, including commercial, banking, real property, wills and personal injury cases, before becoming a justice of the Italian Supreme Court of Cassation; he also served on the board of directors of the Superior Council of Magistracy from 2012 to 2015 and as a member of the Council of Europes Consultative Council of European Judges. He was elected Italys judge at the European Court of Human Rights on 22 January 2019, succeeding Guido Raimondi, and took office on 4 May 2019 as the sixth Italian judge of the Court.
