Pierino Belli was an Italian soldier and jurist, born in 1502 in Alba in Piedmont and died in 1575. He served as a state councillor and military legal adviser, commanding forces for the Holy Roman Empire in Piedmont before entering the service of the Duchy of Savoy. His 1563 treatise De re militari et de bello was one of the most comprehensive treatments of military law and the rules of war written up to that time, and it is counted among the founding texts of what became modern international humanitarian law.
