Paulus Catena, nicknamed 'the Chain' or 'the Fetter' (active in the 350s, died 361 or 362), was a senior Roman public official who served as an investigator and notary for the emperor Constantius II during the mid-fourth century. He is principally known through the writings of the historian Ammianus Marcellinus, though he also appears in the works of Libanius and Julian the Apostate. Marcellinus describes him as infamously cruel and a skilled fabricator of false accusations.
