P. B. Gajendragadkar

Pralhad Balacharya Gajendragadkar was the seventh Chief Justice of India, serving from February 1964 to March 1966. Born in 1901 in the Bombay Presidency, he served as a judge of the Bombay High Court from 1945 before his elevation to the Supreme Court in 1957. Over his Supreme Court career he authored four hundred ninety four judgments across one thousand three hundred thirty seven bench appearances, with his rulings especially shaping constitutional and industrial law. He was also a Sanskrit scholar who edited translations of the Upanishads, chaired the Law Commission of India, and headed government commissions on labor and banking; he received the Padma Vibhushan in 1972 and died in 1981.
