Odofredus was an Italian jurist and legal scholar who died on 3 December 1265. He became a law professor at Bologna in 1228 after studying under prominent legal authorities and working as an advocate in Italy and France. His commentaries on Roman law preserved biographical information about twelfth and thirteenth century jurists otherwise poorly recorded, and he gained renown for an engaging teaching style, frequently punctuating his lectures with personal observations introduced by the phrase Or signori, meaning listen, gentlemen; his most celebrated remark was that everybody wants to know, but nobody wants to know the price of knowledge.
