Norberto Bobbio (1909-2004) was an Italian philosopher of law and political theorist from Turin who built general theories of legal norms and legal order influenced by Hans Kelsen, publishing Theory of Legal Norms in 1958 and A Theory of Legal Order in 1960. A self-described socialist and defender of the rule of law, the separation of powers and procedural democracy, he became known for his influential account of the left-right political distinction and is widely regarded as one of the leading Italian intellectuals of the twentieth century.
