Newton Ogilvie Thompson

Newton Ogilvie Thompson (27 May 1904 to 1 July 1992) was a South African judge who served as the thirteenth Chief Justice of South Africa from 1971 to 1974. Born in Kentani in the Cape Colony, he served as a Judge of the Cape Provincial Division from 1949 to 1957 before advancing to the Appellate Division bench in 1958, where he remained until becoming Chief Justice. His judgments were noted for being well ordered, lucidly expressed and meticulous in their attention to the points at issue, and after his tenure as Chief Justice he continued serving on the courts of appeal of Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland. He died in Kenilworth, Cape Town.
