What was Roscoe Pound's part in sociological jurisprudence and legal realism?
He founded sociological jurisprudence and was an early leader of American Legal Realism before turning against the realists.
Roscoe Pound is described as the founder of the movement for sociological jurisprudence, which held that principles and doctrines should be adjusted to the human conditions they are to govern rather than to assumed first principles. He was an influential critic of the line of United States Supreme Court cases on liberty of contract, symbolized by Lochner v. New York, and one of the early leaders of the movement for American Legal Realism. After Franklin Roosevelt proposed packing the federal courts in 1937, Pound turned against the New Deal and soon became a leading critic of the legal realists.
