Anthony Murray Gleeson served as the eleventh Chief Justice of Australia, sitting on the High Court of Australia from 1998 to 2008. He was the first chief justice of a state supreme court elevated directly to the High Court since Samuel Griffith, and his tenure was marked by an emphasis on judicial independence, the rule of law, and collaborative decision making that produced numerous joint judgments among the justices. He spoke publicly against torture and detention without trial during his time on the bench.
