Muhammad Hatta Ali served as the thirteenth Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Indonesia, first elected in February 2012 and sworn in on March 1 of that year, then re-elected for a second term running from 2017 until he was succeeded by Muhammad Syarifuddin in April 2020. Born in 1950 in Parepare, South Sulawesi, he became a judge on the North Jakarta District Court in 1982, rose to the High Court in 2003, and joined the Supreme Court itself in 2007, five years before his election as Chief Justice.
