Mikhail Nikolaevich Gernet (1874 to 1953) was a Russian and Soviet legal scholar considered the founder of sociological criminology in Russia, who taught law at Moscow State University from 1897 and later at the Psychoneurological Institute in Moscow. He was a prominent opponent of capital punishment, introduced the concept of resocialization into Russian criminal law scholarship, and after the Russian Revolution returned to Moscow University where he contributed to Soviet legal codification efforts in the 1930s.
