Michael Attaleiates (about 1022 to about 1080) was a Byzantine judge, public servant and historian who served in the judicial system of the Byzantine Empire during the mid to late eleventh century, rising to the senior honorific ranks of patrikios and anthypatos. In 1072 he compiled the Ponema Nomikon, a synopsis of Byzantine law based on the ninth century Basilika and commissioned by Emperor Michael VII, alongside his better known historical chronicle covering the empire from 1034 to 1079.
