Mehrangiz Manouchehrian, who lived from 1906 to July 5, 2000, was an Iranian lawyer, musician and feminist regarded as Iran's first female lawyer and its first female senator, representing Tehran from 1963 to 1972. Born in Mashhad, she drafted the Family Protection Act, which expanded married women's legal rights, and in 1968 she received the United Nations Prize in the Field of Human Rights for her advocacy. She resigned her Senate seat after a dispute with Prime Minister Jafar Sharif-Emami over his demand that she publicly apologize for her positions, and she served on the central council of the Women's Organization of Iran; the Family Protection Act she had helped draft was repealed after the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
