Mehr Chand Mahajan was an Indian jurist and politician who served as the third Chief Justice of India, holding the post from January to December 1954 after joining the Supreme Court as a judge in 1950. Born in 1889 in Kangra, Punjab, he practiced law for three decades before his judicial career and also served as Prime Minister of Jammu and Kashmir from October 1947 to March 1948, playing a role in the state joining India. He was the Indian National Congress nominee on the Radcliffe Commission that determined the India Pakistan boundary. Over his time on the Supreme Court he authored one hundred thirty two judgments across three hundred thirty seven benches, and he died in 1967.
