Max Kaser (1906 to 1997) was a German legal historian and one of the most influential twentieth century scholars of Roman law. Born in Vienna, he taught successively at Munster, Hamburg and Salzburg and wrote textbooks tracing the historical evolution of Roman civil law into modern European civil law, works translated into English, Spanish, Japanese and Korean that earned him eleven honorary doctorates.
