Mattias Kumm

Mattias Kumm, born in 1967 in Bremen, Germany, is a legal scholar who holds the Inge Rennert Professorship of Law at New York University School of Law and a research professorship on globalization and the rule of law in Berlin. He studied law, philosophy and political science at the University of Kiel, the University of Paris I Pantheon-Sorbonne and Harvard University, where he earned a doctorate. His research addresses basic questions in global, European and comparative public law, particularly the connections between law, claims of legitimate authority and public reasoning, and argues for reconceiving the liberal democratic constitutional tradition in cosmopolitan and pluralist terms, drawing on the work of Hans Kelsen, Robert Alexy and Ronald Dworkin. He divides his professional and residential life between New York City and Berlin.
