Maria Farida Indrati

Maria Farida Indrati, born June 14, 1949, in Surakarta, Central Java, is a former justice of the Constitutional Court of Indonesia who served two terms, from 2008 to 2018, as the sole woman among the court's nine members. She earned a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Indonesia in 1975, a Master of Laws in 1997 and a doctorate in 2002, and was appointed to the court by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in 2008 after initially declining requests from women's rights organizations to seek the post. Known for a principled and sometimes dissenting judicial approach, she voiced concern that the country's anti-pornography legislation used ambiguous definitions that could criminalize traditional cultural expression, and she also dissented from rulings on blasphemy law and legislative gender quotas. She continued teaching law at the University of Indonesia and as a guest lecturer elsewhere throughout her time on the court.
