Marcel Planiol, born 23 September 1853 in Nantes, France, and who died 31 August 1931 in Paris, was a French legal scholar who studied at the Faculty of Law of Paris, completing his doctoral thesis in 1879 and obtaining his teaching license, the agregation, in 1880. He taught at the University of Grenoble, then the University of Rennes from 1882, and finally the Sorbonne from 1887, succeeding Charles Beudant and teaching Roman law, inheritance, labor law, patent law and criminal law. He is best known for his 1901 Elementary Treatise of Civil Law, which explained French civil law through elementary principles and Roman law maxims and reorganized the subject by topic rather than following the Civil Code's own structure, and he later collaborated with Georges Ripert on the Practical Treatise on Civil Law.
