Madan Mohan Punchhi (1933 to 2015) was the twenty-eighth Chief Justice of India, serving from January to October 1998. Born in Pakpattan, Punjab, and educated at the University of Delhi's Faculty of Law, he began legal practice in his father's chambers in 1955, became a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 1979, and joined the Supreme Court of India in 1989. After retiring he headed the Commission on Centre-State Relations, later known as the Punchhi Commission, which examined India's federal structure.
