Mandakolathur Patanjali Sastri served as the second Chief Justice of India, from November 1951 to January 1954, succeeding Harilal Jekisundas Kania, who died suddenly in office. Born in 1889 in Tamil Nadu to a family of Sanskrit scholars, he practiced as an advocate at the Madras High Court from 1914, gaining a reputation for his work in tax law, before joining the Madras High Court bench in 1939 and later the Federal Court in 1947. As Chief Justice of the Supreme Court he authored seventy five judgments and sat on one hundred seventy one benches. After retiring he served on the Madras Legislative Council and chaired the Central Sanskrit Board until his death in 1963.
