Madhukar Hiralal Kania was the twenty third Chief Justice of India, serving from December 1991 to November 1992. Born in Bombay in 1927, he was the nephew of Harilal Jekisundas Kania, the first Chief Justice of India, and was enrolled as an advocate in 1949. He rose through the Bombay High Court, becoming its Chief Justice in 1986, before joining the Supreme Court in 1987. As Chief Justice he administered the oath of office to President Shankar Dayal Sharma, and over his Supreme Court career he authored one hundred seven judgments across four hundred fifty four benches. He died in 2016.
