Luzius Wildhaber was a Swiss jurist who lived from 1937 to 2020 and served as the first president of the reformed European Court of Human Rights. He earned a Master of Laws from Yale in 1965 and a doctorate in 1968, then became a professor of law at the University of Fribourg in 1971 and later held academic posts at the University of Basel as professor, dean and rector. Wildhaber was elected a judge of the European Court of Human Rights in 1991 and served as its president from November 1998 to January 2007, the first president after Protocol 11 took effect, which allowed direct citizen access to the court across the Council of Europe's forty-seven member states.
