Ludwig Enneccerus was a German legal scholar and politician who studied at Gottingen, earned his doctorate in 1868, and was appointed to a professorship there in 1872 before moving the following year to the University of Marburg, where he taught for the rest of his career. His scholarship centered on Roman law and, after 1900, on the new German civil code, and his multi-volume Lehrbuch des Burgerlichen Rechts, first published from Marburg in 1904, became one of the standard textbooks of German civil law, later continued by other scholars as the Enneccerus-Kipp-Wolff treatise. As a National Liberal deputy in the Reichstag, he served on the second commission that drafted the Burgerliches Gesetzbuch and was regarded as the most important jurist in parliament as the code's second draft moved through the legislature.
