Sir Joshua Abraham Hassan, who lived from August 21, 1915 to July 1, 1997, was a Gibraltarian lawyer and politician born to a Sephardic Jewish family with roots in Morocco and Menorca. He trained at the Middle Temple and was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 1939, going on to found the law chambers that became Hassans International, the largest law firm in Gibraltar. He served as Gibraltar's first Mayor from 1955 to 1969 and as its first and third Chief Minister across more than twenty years in office between 1964 and 1987, playing a central role in building Gibraltar's institutions of self-government. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1963.
