Josef Kohler, born 9 March 1849 in Offenburg, Germany, and who died 3 August 1919 in Charlottenburg, was a German jurist, author and poet who studied at the Universities of Freiburg and Heidelberg, earning his Doctor of Laws degree in 1873. He was appointed a judge in Mannheim in 1874, then became a professor at the University of Wurzburg in 1878 and at Humboldt University of Berlin in 1888. Kohler advanced the comparative history of law through his contributions to legal journals, particularly the Zeitschrift fur vergleichende Rechtswissenschaft, and his scholarly output spanned comparative law, including study of Islamic, Chinese and Indian legal systems, civil law with a focus on patent and copyright law, legal philosophy, and international law; he also published poetry and works on art history.
