Jose Maria Ruda (1924 to 1994) was an Argentine jurist born in Buenos Aires, educated at the University of Buenos Aires and holding a master of laws degree from New York University. He is remembered for the 1964 Ruda Statement, an eight thousand word speech to the United Nations Special Committee on Decolonization concerning the status of the Falkland Islands. He served on the United Nations International Law Commission from 1964 to 1972, as Argentina's ambassador to the United Nations from 1966 to 1970, and as a judge of the International Court of Justice from 1973 to 1991, presiding over the court from 1988 to 1991. He died in Spain in 1994.
