Ratu Joni Madraiwiwi was a Fijian jurist and statesman who lived from 1957 to 2016 and was born into a chiefly family descended from Fijian royalty. He earned his law degree from the University of Adelaide and an LLM in comparative law, specializing in air and space law, from McGill University, and served as a High Court judge of Fiji from 1997 to 2000. He was Vice President of Fiji from 2004 to 2007, acting as President from 2005 to 2006, and later served as Chief Justice of Nauru from 2014 until his death in office in 2016. In 2010 King George Tupou V of Tonga made him a life peer with the title Lord Madraiwiwi Tangatatonga, and he was known for advocating political moderation and inclusive governance across the communities of Fiji.
