John Robert Cartwright was a Canadian lawyer and judge born March 23, 1895 in Toronto, who practiced law in that city before his appointment as a puisne justice of the Supreme Court of Canada in 1949, when the court was expanded from seven to nine justices. Nominated by Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson, he was elevated to Chief Justice of Canada in 1967 and served until his death on March 23, 1970, completing a total of twenty years on the court.
