John Henry Merryman (1920-2015) was an American legal scholar at Stanford Law School regarded as a founder of art law as a legal discipline in the United States and a leading figure in comparative law. His book The Civil Law Tradition: An Introduction to the Legal Systems of Western Europe and Latin America (1969) became a standard English-language introduction to the civil law world, and he also co-wrote The Italian Legal System (1967) and founded the International Journal of Cultural Property in 1992.
