John Chipman Gray lived from July 14, 1839 to February 25, 1915 and was an American scholar of property law and a professor at Harvard Law School. He also founded the law firm Ropes and Gray with law partner John Codman Ropes. He was the half-brother of United States Supreme Court Associate Justice Horace Gray and a grandson of the merchant and politician William Gray.
