Jean-Etienne-Marie Portalis was a French jurist and politician who lived from 1746 to 1807, active during the French Revolution and the First French Empire. He was one of the chief draftsmen of the Napoleonic Code, which became the foundational framework of the French legal system. He was the father of Joseph Marie Portalis, a diplomat and statesman.
