Jayantilal Chhotalal Shah (1906 to 1991) was the twelfth Chief Justice of India, serving briefly from December 1970 to January 1971. Born in Ahmedabad, he began practicing law there in 1929 and later served as a prosecutor in the case against Nathuram Godse for the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, before becoming a judge of the Bombay High Court in 1949 and of the Supreme Court of India in 1959. After retiring he headed the Shah Commission, established in 1977 to investigate abuses committed during India's Emergency, which found the Emergency unjustified and constitutional protections systematically violated.
