James Stratford (19 July 1869 to 17 January 1952) was a South African judge who briefly served as Chief Justice of the Union of South Africa between 1938 and 1939. Born in Port Elizabeth in the Cape Colony, he earned law degrees at Oxford, was called to the English bar in 1898, and began practicing law in South Africa in 1901. He served as a judge of the Transvaal Provincial Division from 1921 and was elevated to the Appellate Division in 1927, before retiring from the office of Chief Justice after one year on reaching the mandatory retirement age of seventy.
