Sir James Rose Innes (8 January 1855 to 16 January 1942) was Chief Justice of South Africa from 1914 to 1927 and is widely regarded as one of the country's greatest judges. Before joining the judiciary he served as a member of the Cape Parliament and as Attorney General of the Cape Colony, and became a prominent critic of Cecil John Rhodes. Born in Grahamstown in the Cape Colony, he was admitted to the Cape bar in 1878 and went on to help establish the foundations of South African common law during his time on the bench.
