Jacob Koppel Javits lived from May 18, 1904 to March 7, 1986 and was an American lawyer and politician from New York. A member of the Republican Party, he served in the United States House of Representatives from 1947 to 1954 and in the United States Senate from 1957 to 1981, and was Attorney General of New York from 1955 to 1957. Considered a liberal Republican, he supported labor unions, the Great Society, and the civil rights movement, and played a key role in passing civil rights legislation including the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. An opponent of the Vietnam War, he drafted the War Powers Resolution of 1973, and he also sponsored the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974, which regulated private pension plans. He lost the 1980 Republican Senate primary and ran unsuccessfully in the general election as the Liberal Party nominee.
