Irnerius was an Italian jurist born around 1050 who died sometime after 1125 and before 1140. He founded the School of Glossators and revived the study of medieval Roman law, teaching the newly recovered lawcode of Justinian I at the University of Bologna and introducing the practice of annotating legal texts with explanatory glosses, at first between the lines and later in the margins. His recovery and teaching of Roman law at Bologna in the 1070s initiated a transformative period in European legal history, helping establish a European law that was written, systematic, comprehensive and rational, and based on Roman law, making him a foundational figure in modern legal education and jurisprudence.
