Irene Antoinette Geffen, born Irene Newmark to Lithuanian Jewish immigrant parents, was admitted to the bar in the Transvaal in 1923, becoming the first woman to practice law in South Africa. She and her husband Max settled in Johannesburg, where she practiced until leaving the profession after the birth of her first daughter, Zoe. In 1928, following an initiative of the International Council of Women to document laws affecting women and children around the world, she published The Laws of South Africa Affecting Women and Children. Her younger daughter, Felicia Kentridge, born in 1930, also became an attorney and went on to run a legal clinic at the University of the Witwatersrand.
