Ibn Kathir (c. 1300-1373) was an Arab Islamic scholar, jurist of the Shafii school, and historian who studied under Ibn Taymiyya and was based in Damascus. He is primarily known for his Quranic commentary Tafsir Ibn Kathir, which took a critical approach to non-Islamic narrative material drawn into earlier exegesis, and for his fourteen-volume universal history al-Bidaya wal-Nihaya. His scholarship emphasized hadith-based interpretation over speculative theology, and he is regarded as a traditionalist within the Athari school.
