Ibn Asakir (1105 to 1176) was a Syrian Sunni Islamic scholar, an accomplished jurist of the Shafi'i school, a hadith specialist, and a prolific writer, renowned as one of the most prominent experts on hadith and Islamic history in the medieval era. He was the pre-eminent figure of the Asakir dynasty, whose family members held prominent positions as judges and scholars of Shafi'i law in Damascus for almost two centuries.
