Hugues Doneau was a French legal scholar of the sixteenth century who, like his contemporary Jacques Cujas, worked within the humanist mos gallicus school of Roman law. Where earlier humanists were content to criticize and annotate the received texts, Doneau set out to build a coherent system of law from them, reorganizing the Corpus Juris Civilis along logical rather than its original compilational lines. His major work, the Commentarii de Iure Civili, treats subjects such as possession and ownership with a systematic rigor that influenced later civil law codification. Forced from France as a Huguenot, he taught in Heidelberg, Leiden and Altdorf, spreading his systematic method across Protestant Europe.
